The 5 Best Beginner Surf Spots in Malibu
Malibu is one of the best places on earth to learn to surf. Long, mellow point breaks, sandy bottoms, and consistent small waves make it forgiving in a way most coastlines aren't. But not every Malibu break is beginner-friendly — some are crowded, rocky, or better left to experienced locals. Here are five spots where beginners actually belong.
1. Surfrider Beach (Second Point)
The most famous wave in Malibu is also one of the best classrooms. While First Point draws the longboard pros, Second Point offers a longer, softer shoulder that's ideal for learning to pop up and ride. Go early on a weekday to beat the crowds, and stay aware of the lineup — it's busy for a reason.
2. Zuma Beach
Zuma's wide sandy beach break is perfect for beginners because there's room to spread out. The waves here are typically mellow, the bottom is sand (no rocks), and you can find your own peak away from the crowds. It's our go-to recommendation for first-timers who want space to make mistakes.
3. Topanga Beach
A favorite among longboarders, Topanga serves up knee-high, peeling waves that are tailor-made for learning. The vibe is mellower than Surfrider, the waves are consistent, and the long rides give you time to practice your stance. Just watch the rocks near the point.
4. County Line
Up in northern Malibu, County Line's beach break is gentle and welcoming. The inside section is soft and forgiving — great for whitewater practice — while the point nearby handles bigger days. Fewer crowds than central Malibu, which means more waves for you.
5. Leo Carrillo
Often overlooked, Leo Carrillo has a mellow beach break north of the point that's excellent for beginners on small days. It's scenic, less crowded, and the gradual sandy bottom keeps things friendlyfew tips before you go
Check the surf forecast. Knee-to-waist-high days are ideal. Anything overhead is not a beginner day.
Go in the morning. Winds are usually calmest before 10am.
Take a lesson first. An hour with an instructor will teach you more than a week of trial and error — ocean safety, positioning, and timing are hard to learn alone.
