Topanga vs. Surfrider vs. Zuma: Where Should Beginners Actually Surf?
These are the three Malibu breaks every visitor asks about. They're all great — but they're great for different people. Here's the honest local breakdown.
Surfrider Beach: the icon
The wave: A world-famous right-hand point break with three sections (First, Second, Third Point). Long, peeling, perfect — on the right day.
For beginners: Second Point on a small day is genuinely excellent for learning. But Surfrider is also the most crowded break in Malibu, and the lineup hierarchy is real. Beginners should stay wide of the peak, watch, and wait their turn.
Vibe: Historic, scenic, busy. The Malibu Pier, the Colony in the distance — it's postcard California.
Best for: Beginners with a lesson or some experience, longboarders, anyone who wants to surf the wave.
Topanga Beach: the mellow local
The wave: A soft, crumbly point/reef break with long, slow rides. Rarely big, rarely heavy.
For beginners: Arguably the most beginner-friendly of the three. The waves are gentle, the takeoff zone is forgiving, and the long rides give you time to practice. Rockier entry than the others, so booties or careful footwork help.
Vibe: Laid-back, artsy, local. Less tourist traffic than Surfrider.
Best for: True beginners, longboarders working on style, anyone who wants a chill session.
Zuma Beach: the wide-open beach break
The wave: A classic Southern California beach break — shifting peaks over sand, with room for everyone.
For beginners: The best choice for total first-timers. Sandy bottom (no rocks), tons of space to spread out, and mellow whitewater as far as you can see. You won't bother anyone and no one will bother you.
Vibe: Big, open, family-friendly. Classic LA beach day energy.
Best for: First-timers, families with kids, anyone who wants space and simplicity.
The verdict
Surfrider | Topanga | Zuma | |
Beginner-friendliness | Good (with guidance) | Excellent | Excellent |
Crowds | Heavy | Moderate | Light–moderate |
Bottom | Sand/cobble | Rock/reef | Sand |
Scenery | Iconic | Charming | Classic beach |
Our recommendation: If it's your very first time, go to Zuma with an instructor. If you've stood up a few times and want the classic Malibu experience, Surfrider's Second Point with a guide is unforgettable. If you want mellow longboard waves and local flavor, Topanga.
