Kids Surf Lessons in Malibu: What Parents Should Know
Few things beat watching your kid catch their first wave. Malibu's gentle, sandy-bottom breaks make it one of the best places in the world for kids to learn. Here's everything parents need to know.
What's the right age to start?
Most kids are ready around age 5–7, depending on the child. The real prerequisites: they should be comfortable in the water, able to swim a short distance, and excited (not pressured) to try. We've taught focused 5-year-olds who took to it instantly and cautious 10-year-olds who needed a gentler ramp — every kid is different, and a good instructor reads that in the first five minutes.
Private vs. group for kids
For kids under 8, we strongly recommend private or semi-private lessons. Young kids need constant supervision and hands-on help, which gets diluted in a group. Older kids and teens do great in groups — the social energy actually helps.
Safety comes first (here's how we handle it)
Soft-top boards only. No hard boards for kids, ever.
Shallow, mellow breaks. We teach kids in whitewater close to shore, not in the lineup.
Instructor in the water. Your child's instructor is right beside them the entire session, not shouting from the beach.
Ocean briefing first. Every lesson starts with rip currents, wave timing, and what to do if they get scared. Knowledge is the real safety device.
What to bring for your grom
Swimsuit, towel, dry clothes, and warm layers for after
Reef-safe sunscreen (applied 20 minutes before the wetsuit)
Snacks and water — surfing burns serious energy
Their stoke. We'll handle the rest.
We provide the board, wetsuit, leash, and rash guard.
How many lessons?
One lesson is a great birthday surprise. But if your kid catches the bug (most do), plan on 3–5 sessions. That's usually enough to go from whitewater to catching unbroken waves with confidence.
A note for nervous parents
It's normal to be more nervous than your kid. Our instructors are trained in water safety and first aid, the teaching zones are shallow and controlled, and you're welcome to watch from the beach the whole time. Most parents tell us afterward they wished they'd tried it themselves — and many do.
