What Wetsuit Do You Need in Malibu? A Season-by-Season Guide
Malibu isn't tropical — the Pacific here runs from the high 50s to the high 60s. The right wetsuit is the difference between a two-hour session and tapping out shivering after 30 minutes. Here's what to wear, when.
Quick answer
Season | Water temp | What to wear |
Summer (Jun–Aug) | 64–68°F | 3/2mm fullsuit or springsuit |
Fall (Sep–Nov) | 62–68°F | 3/2mm fullsuit |
Winter (Dec–Feb) | 58–62°F | 4/3mm fullsuit |
Spring (Mar–May) | 58–64°F | 4/3mm fullsuit |
What do the numbers mean?
Wetsuit thickness is listed as two numbers (e.g., 3/2mm): the first is the torso thickness, the second is the arms and legs. Your core needs more insulation than your limbs. A 3/2 is the Southern California workhorse — it covers you comfortably for most of the year.
Fit matters more than brand
A wetsuit works by trapping a thin layer of water against your skin that your body warms. If it's loose, cold water flushes through constantly and the suit is useless. It should feel snug everywhere — uncomfortably snug when dry is normal. Check:
No big gaps at the neck, wrists, or ankles
Full range of motion for paddling (raise your arms overhead)
Zipper (back or chest) lies flat
Springsuits, shorties, and tops
On the warmest late-summer days, some surfers go with a springsuit (short arms and legs). It works if you run warm and the water's pushing 68°F — but most people are happier in a full 3/2. When in doubt, bring the fullsuit. You can always flush water through the neck to cool down; you can't add warmth you didn't bring.
Booties, gloves, hoods?
In Malibu, rarely. Mid-winter mornings in the high 50s might tempt you toward 2mm booties, and there's no shame in it — warm feet make for a longer session. Hoods and gloves are NorCal territory.
Rentals vs. buying
If you're taking a lesson, your wetsuit is included — one less thing to think about. If you're surfing regularly (weekly or more), buy your own: a well-fitting suit is worth it, and rental suits fit "everyone," which means no one. Rinse with fresh water after every session and hang dry in the shade — never in direct sun, which destroys neoprene.
The takeaway
For Malibu, own a 3/2mm fullsuit and you'll be covered 9 months of the year. Add a 4/3mm if you surf through winter. That's the whole quiver for most people.
