The Best Time of Year to Surf Malibu: A Month-by-Month Guide
Malibu breaks year-round, but "year-round" doesn't mean "the same." Swell direction, water temperature, crowds, and wind all shift with the seasons. Here's what to expect, month by month.
Spring (March – May)
South swells start waking up while winter's northwest energy fades. Water is at its coldest (high 50s), so bring a 4/3mm wetsuit. Crowds are thin — this is the locals' favorite season for empty lineups. Inconsistent, but magical when it's on.
Summer (June – August)
Peak south swell season. Surfrider and the other south-facing points light up with long, peeling waves. Water warms into the mid-to-high 60s — a 3/2mm or even a springsuit works. The tradeoff: crowds. Summer weekends at the famous spots are packed. Go early on weekdays, or book a lesson and let your instructor navigate the lineup.
Fall (September – November)
Ask most Malibu surfers and they'll tell you: fall is the best season. South swells linger, Santa Ana winds groom the faces glassy, and the summer crowds vanish after Labor Day. Water stays warm into October. If you're planning a surf trip, plan it for fall.
Winter (December – February)
Northwest swells take over, lighting up spots like County Line while the south-facing points go quieter. Water drops to the high 50s — full 4/3mm, booties optional but welcome. Storms can blow things out, but between systems you'll find some of the year's best-shaped waves with hardly anyone out.
So when should YOU go?
First-timer? Late summer through fall: warm water, forgiving waves, manageable crowds (especially September).
Planning a trip? September or October for the best combination of swell, weather, and empty lineups.
On a budget? Winter weekdays — cheaper lodging, fewer crowds, and solid waves between storms.
One more thing: conditions change daily. A "bad" month can deliver an epic week, and vice versa. Check the forecast, but don't overthink it — the best day to surf is the day you go.
