Private vs. Group Surf Lessons: Which Is Right for You?
One of the first decisions you'll make is format: private 1-on-1, semi-private, or group. Each has real advantages — here's how to choose honestly.
Private lessons (1-on-1)
Best for: nervous beginners, kids under 8, anyone with a specific goal, surfers working on a particular skill.
Pros:
100% of the instructor's attention — every wave is coached
Fastest progress by far; what takes 4 group sessions can happen in 1–2
Fully customized: the pace, the break, the feedback all adapt to you
Ideal if you're anxious about the ocean
Cons:
Highest price per person
Less social
Verdict: If you want to learn as fast as possible, or you're nervous, go private. It's the best money you'll spend on surfing.
Semi-private (2 people)
Best for: couples, friends, parent + child.
Pros:
Nearly as much coaching as private, split two ways
Shared experience — learning together is more fun
Better value than 1-on-1
Cons:
You need a partner at roughly your level
Verdict: The sweet spot for most people. Bring a friend and split the difference.
Group lessons (3+ people)
Best for: families, parties, corporate outings, bachelor/bachelorette groups, budget-conscious beginners.
Pros:
Most affordable per person
Social and fun — great energy
Perfect for events and celebrations
Cons:
Less individual feedback; you'll share the instructor's attention
Slower skill progression per session
Works best when the group is at a similar level
Verdict: For a fun day with friends or family, groups are unbeatable. For rapid skill-building, they're not the tool.
The honest math
One private lesson typically advances you as much as three or four group sessions. So while private costs more per hour, it can actually be cheaper per unit of progress. If your goal is "stand up and have a blast with friends," go group. If your goal is "actually learn to surf," go private — or start private and join groups once you've got the basics.
Can you mix and match?
Absolutely — and it's what we recommend. Start with one private to build fundamentals safely, then join group sessions to practice in a fun, social setting. Best of both worlds.
