Winter point-break country

Surfing Santa Barbara and Ventura means classic winter right points from Jalama to County Line, lit up by west and northwest swells. The Channel Islands block much southern energy, so summer can be small — but when a winter west swell arrives, this is California's most storied point-break country.

Jalama Beach

Western Santa Barbara County. Jalama Beach is a beach/reef mix - exposed coastline produces powerful, wind-sensitive peaks over sand and rock. The window is W-NW, 3-8 ft with E-NE wind at Mid (Fall-spring); it suits intermediate-plus surfers.

  • Ideal swell: W-NW, 3-8 ft

  • Best wind: E-NE

  • Best tide: Mid

  • Best season: Fall-spring

  • Skill level: Intermediate+

Address: 9999 Jalama Rd, Lompoc, CA 93436 — Jalama Beach County Park (Jalama Rd off Highway 1).

Access: County-park road and day-use lot; the drive is long and services limited.

Parking: Day-use lot at the end of the 14.5-mile park road; day-use entry fees apply and the lot can fill up on weekends and good surf days — arrive early, since it's a long drive back out.

Local tip: Check wind before committing to the road. Bring food, water and warm layers.

Refugio

West of Santa Barbara. Refugio is a right point/reef - a sheltered, longboard-friendly wall appears on larger west swells. The window is W, 3-7 ft with N-NE wind at Mid to high (Nov-Mar); it suits intermediate surfers.

  • Ideal swell: W, 3-7 ft

  • Best wind: N-NE

  • Best tide: Mid to high

  • Best season: Nov-Mar

  • Skill level: Intermediate

Address: 10 Refugio Beach Rd, Goleta, CA 93117 — Refugio State Beach (US-101 exit 120, Refugio Rd).

Access: State-beach lot and campground; day-use fees may apply.

Parking: Large day-use parking lot with an entry fee; surfers' vans claim the right side early, and the lot fills on busy weekends — arrive early.

Local tip: Needs more swell than exposed beaches. Do not climb on wet rocks to force a shortcut.

El Capitan

West of Santa Barbara. El Capitan is a right point/reef - a wrapping wall offers trim and turns when west swell bends into the point. The window is W-NW, 3-8 ft with N-NE wind at Mid (Nov-Mar); it suits intermediate-plus surfers.

  • Ideal swell: W-NW, 3-8 ft

  • Best wind: N-NE

  • Best tide: Mid

  • Best season: Nov-Mar

  • Skill level: Intermediate+

Address: 2 El Capitan State Beach Rd, Goleta, CA 93117 — El Capitan State Beach (US-101 exit 117).

Access: State-beach access; campground and day-use capacity can fill.

Parking: Paid day-use lot near the beach and camp store; fills on good swell days, and the campground reserves out months ahead in peak season — arrive early.

Local tip: Rocky entry and compact peak reward patience; do not crowd the takeoff.

Sands

Isla Vista. Sands is a beach/reef mix - sandbars beside reef produce short, punchy lefts and rights. The window is W-SW, 2-6 ft with N-NE wind at Mid (Fall-spring); it suits intermediate surfers.

  • Ideal swell: W-SW, 2-6 ft

  • Best wind: N-NE

  • Best tide: Mid

  • Best season: Fall-spring

  • Skill level: Intermediate

Address: Del Playa Dr at Camino Majorca, Isla Vista, CA 93117 — trail access to Sands Beach (Del Playa ends at the beach trails).

Access: Campus-area streets and trails; parking restrictions are heavily enforced.

Parking: No dedicated lot — free street parking on Del Playa Dr and nearby blocks is hard to find and heavily ticketed, so bike, walk, or arrive very early.

Local tip: Cliffs and tides affect access. Keep distance from unstable bluff edges.

Campus Point

UC Santa Barbara. Campus Point is a right point/reef - soft, peeling walls suit longboards on moderate west swells. The window is W, 2-5 ft with N-NE wind at Mid to high (Fall-winter); it suits beginners on small, clean days (intermediate surfers otherwise).

  • Ideal swell: W, 2-5 ft

  • Best wind: N-NE

  • Best tide: Mid to high

  • Best season: Fall-winter

  • Skill level: Beginner on small days; intermediate otherwise

Address: W Campus Point Ln, Goleta, CA 93117 — UC Santa Barbara (Campus Point, south side of campus).

Access: Campus parking requires attention to permits; bike or walk when possible.

Parking: Use UCSB visitor lots such as the Mesa Parking Structure (Structure 18) on Mesa Rd — permits are required daily — then bike or walk south to the point.

Local tip: A teaching-friendly wave when small; stay out of research and protected shoreline areas.

Leadbetter Point

Santa Barbara. Leadbetter Point is a right point/beach wave - gentle, rolling walls favor longboards and developing surfers. The window is W-SW, 1-4 ft with N-NE wind at Mid to high (Winter; occasional spring swell); it suits beginners.

  • Ideal swell: W-SW, 1-4 ft

  • Best wind: N-NE

  • Best tide: Mid to high

  • Best season: Winter; occasional spring swell

  • Skill level: Beginner

Address: 801 Shoreline Dr, Santa Barbara, CA 93109 — Leadbetter Beach (Leadbetter Lot), just west of the harbor.

Access: City beach lots near the harbor; paid parking is common.

Parking: Large paid city lot (Leadbetter Lot) directly off Shoreline Dr, with a few free 90-minute spots; Harbor West lot nearby works as overflow. Fills on summer weekends — arrive early.

Local tip: Often tiny. When it breaks, share the limited takeoff and avoid the harbor channel.

Rincon

Carpinteria/Ventura county line. Rincon is a classic right point - three sections can connect into long, fast walls over cobble and sand. The window is W-NW, 3-10 ft with N-NE wind at Low to mid (Nov-Mar); it suits intermediate-plus surfers (advanced surfers when it is large).

  • Ideal swell: W-NW, 3-10 ft

  • Best wind: N-NE

  • Best tide: Low to mid

  • Best season: Nov-Mar

  • Skill level: Intermediate+; advanced when large

Address: 100 S Bates Rd, Carpinteria, CA 93013 — Rincon Beach Park (Bates Rd exit off US-101).

Access: Small lots and roadside access on both county sides; never park on freeway shoulders.

Parking: Free Rincon Beach Park lot (about 190 spots) plus the State Parks lot near the point — both fill early on good swells, so arrive before 9am on weekends.

Local tip: The Queen of the Coast is intensely crowded. Enter through the channel, respect rotation and do not expect set waves immediately.

Mondos

North Ventura County. Mondos is a soft point/beach wave - slow, rolling rights favor longboards, lessons and first green waves. The window is W, 1-4 ft with N-NE wind at Mid to high (Year-round; best winter); it suits beginners.

  • Ideal swell: W, 1-4 ft

  • Best wind: N-NE

  • Best tide: Mid to high

  • Best season: Year-round; best winter

  • Skill level: Beginner

Address: Pacific Coast Hwy (CA-1), Ventura, CA 93001 — Mondos Beach, just south of Seacliff and north of Emma Wood.

Access: Highway 101 frontage parking; cross and unload carefully.

Parking: Free parallel parking on the old-highway shoulder along the ocean side; spots are usually easy to find. Use the crosswalk to reach the sand.

Local tip: A forgiving fallback. Keep beginners together and out of the through-line of longer rides.

Ventura Point - C Street

Ventura. Ventura Point - C Street is a right point/reef - lined-up walls run through several sections, from mellow shoulder to fast inside. The window is W-NW, 2-8 ft with N-NE wind at Low to mid (Oct-Mar); it suits intermediate surfers.

  • Best season: Oct-Mar

  • Skill level: Intermediate

Address: 901 San Pedro St, Ventura, CA 93001 — San Buenaventura State Beach lot, at the east end of the promenade to C Street.

Access: Promenade and fairgrounds-area parking; event days alter access.

Parking: Paid lots at the state beach and at Surfers Point off Harbor Blvd; check the fairgrounds calendar, since events can close streets and choke access. Walk the promenade west to C Street.

Local tip: Current moves surfers through the lineup. Re-enter the rotation rather than paddling straight back to the peak.

Emma Wood

Ventura. Emma Wood is a cobble point/beach break - fast rights form over rock and sand, with shorebreak at higher tide. The window is W-NW, 3-8 ft with N-NE wind at Low to mid (Oct-Mar); it suits intermediate-plus surfers.

  • Ideal swell: W-NW, 3-8 ft

  • Best wind: N-NE

  • Best tide: Low to mid

  • Best season: Oct-Mar

  • Skill level: Intermediate+

Address: Emma Wood State Beach, CA-1, Ventura, CA 93001 — access road off US-101, about two miles west of Ventura.

Access: State-beach and frontage access; some areas close seasonally.

Parking: Paid park entry with a small day-use area that fills quickly on surf days — arrive early, since re-entry isn't guaranteed once the lot is full.

Local tip: Protect feet, time the shorebreak, and avoid standing on wet cobbles with your back to the ocean.

Silver Strand

Oxnard. Silver Strand is a jetty beach break - sandbars near harbor structures form hollow lefts and rights on clean swell. The window is W-SW, 2-7 ft with NE-E wind at Mid (Fall-spring); it suits intermediate-plus surfers.

  • Ideal swell: W-SW, 2-7 ft

  • Best wind: NE-E

  • Best tide: Mid

  • Best season: Fall-spring

  • Skill level: Intermediate+

Address: Ocean Dr, Oxnard, CA 93035 — Silver Strand Beach, between Channel Islands Harbor and Port Hueneme.

Access: Neighborhood street and beach access; obey permit and harbor signs.

Parking: Small free lots at the north and south jetties plus limited free street parking on Ocean Dr; both fill fast on good days, so arrive early.

Local tip: Fast takeoffs and local crowd. Choose a less concentrated peak if you are learning the area.

County Line

Ventura/Los Angeles county line. County Line is a cobble point plus beach peaks - rights peel off the point while sandbars offer shorter lefts and rights. The window is W-NW, 2-7 ft with N-NE wind at Low to mid (Fall-spring); it suits intermediate surfers.

  • Ideal swell: W-NW, 2-7 ft

  • Best wind: N-NE

  • Best tide: Low to mid

  • Best season: Fall-spring

  • Skill level: Intermediate

Address: Pacific Coast Hwy at Yerba Buena Rd, Malibu, CA 90265 — County Line Beach, across from Neptune's Net.

Access: Pacific Coast Highway shoulder parking; traffic and break-ins are concerns.

Parking: Free PCH shoulder parking that fills early — latecomers park across from Neptune's Net and walk over. Park fully off the pavement, hide valuables, and watch for fast traffic when crossing.

Local tip: The point is competitive; the beach peaks are often a better visitor choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do Santa Barbara's point breaks work best?

Winter, when west and northwest swells are the engine. Spots like Rincon and Campus Point come alive on W-NW energy from late fall through early spring.

Why is summer surfing so small in Santa Barbara?

The Channel Islands block much of the southern-hemisphere energy that lights up the rest of Southern California in summer. Summer here means small, inconsistent surf — plan a trip north or wait for winter.

Is Santa Barbara good for beginners?

Yes, in the right spots. Leadbetter Point and Mondos are beginner-friendly, and Campus Point works for beginners on small days. The premier winter points like Rincon are intermediate-plus and crowded when they're on.
