ABOUT OUR SURF CAMP & SURF DIRECTOR MATT ROSAS

I have 30+ years surfing experience with 10+ years full-time teaching surfing from Baja, Mex to Santa Barbara, California. You can always ask me to know where and when you should surf in Calif year round.  

College: Penn State University, Kinesiology/PE-Secondary Education. 

 
I grew up in Palos Verdes, California and have been surfing since 1976. I have been making, shaping, designing surfboards since the 7th grade.  I come from a family of teachers. My parents and brother were all teachers/principal administrators for LAUSD. The passion for teaching runs in my family.  I have been teaching surfing full time since 1999. Prior to that - I was in the corporate world for about 10 years with ACNielsen Marketing Research as the District Coordinator for Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara and Kern Counties. My clients included Johnson & Johnson, Nestle, Philip Morris, Miller Beer, Revlon, Kraft Foods and other Fortune 500 companies. I decided to leave the corporate world and follow my passion—teaching others to surf.  It is my life mission. 
 
Since that decision, I have been teaching surfing privately for a variety of individuals and companies. 
A partial list includes: Sony Pictures, Fox Sports, ABC, WB, RedBull North America, University of Redlands, Santa Monica College, English Language Center, Surfing Divas and many more celebs, locals and visitors.  For the past five years, I was also the surf school teaching for Santa Monica College until the lastest Calif budget cuts. I understand that each of these colleges, communities and companies interviewed dozens of surf schools before selecting me. 

Other beach activities we offer are: paddling, boogie-boarding, swimming, body-surfing, , running, sand sculpture, and beach games such as frisbee, nerf touch-football, beach volleyball, dodge-ball and beach soccer. We also have break times to dry off, rehydrate and relax or play. No child is forced to participate in any activity.

Each student receives a free MalibuLongboards.com surf video and a surfing info package.
In this free info package, valuable surfing secrets, surf maps and critical surf information regarding where and when it is safe to surf. Upon completion of the surf camp students will be able to:
A: Explain how tides impact waves.
B: Demonstrate surfing skills. Proper paddling methods, floating, escaping a rip tide, how to duck dive, how to turtle, how to pop up and more
C: Analyze composition of a wave...too steep or good degree of angle  67 degrees of angle or less for surfing and taking off on a wave.
D: Surfing safety rules and Etiquette.
E: Surfing culture, history and environmental impacts.
Surfing is 3000 years old. First surfers in Caliph were girls in the late 1800's Santa Cruz. Santa Monica is the birth place the first foam board ( Dave Sweet). Santa Monica is the birthplace  of modern skateboarding ( Tony Hawk)
F: Oceanography, stingrays, jelly fish, dolphins, whales, seals and other sea life.

Surf Camp Objectives:
This program is essentially the same surfing course I teach at the college level.
The surf camp goal is to get each student to reach a safe surfing level whereby each student has an understanding of basic surfing techniques.  I adjust the teaching methods accordingly but the end goal is the same....to get you surfing at a level where it is safe for you to practice on your own. We can rent you the surfboards and wet suits from that point.

RELEASE & HOLD HARMLESS AUTHORIZATION FOR A MINOR/ADULT.

There is no substitution for decades of experienced surfing instruction. In fact, it takes at least 10 years to gain the experience necessary to be able to actually teach surfing properly. The LA area online surfing school segment is loaded with imitators who are not qualified.

For your personal safety, watch out for online imitators with "surf school web sites" that are using online marketing to confuse the reality of this amazingly fun sport. You definitely want to use someone who is totally experienced and has the professional equipment/professional experience to actually teach you how to surf.
