Weds if it is not raining at 6:00 AM we will meet at the beach, otherwise
we will meet in the classroom.

The waves might be huge so we should seem some good tube rides. Also the
tide is going be high for the next 6 meetings.

Surf History
First surfers in California were girls. Late 1800's Hawaiian princesses came over and surf in Santa Cruz.
Surfing is 2000-3000 years old. Cave art discoverd on the big Island of Hawaii.
1700-1900 Surf Bathing.
1907 George Freeth. First lifeguard in California. Invented the torpedo shaped bouy still used today. Single handed rescued 12 Japanese fisherman off Santa Monica. 10,000 people watch his surfing skills in Redondo Beach. He was promoted as the Man who could walk on water.
1920 Duke Kahanamoku visited the Santa Monica Victorian Hotel. 5000 people showed up to watch the surfing demo.
1920-1960 Surfing for rich only. Handmade redwood and balsa boards cost $2000 in today money.
1960 Santa Monica, California Dave Sweet invents the first foam board. Using WWII surplus airplane materials. Surfboards become so popular they are sold in Gas Stations.
Surf Movies go Hollywood. Giget, beach blanket, and the real surfers movie Endless Summer.
1970 Shortboard Revolution. Longboard are no longer made in favor of a more aggressive style shortboarding.
1970's Venice/Santa Monica DogTown and Z boys. Birth of modern skateboarding appears from the surfers of this area. Bicknell Hill. Lifeguard tower # 20.
Surfboard History
1900-1960 Redwood and Balsa boards. Very heavy and expensive.
1960 Foam board...longboards typically are 9 foot or longer.
1970 Shortboards....shortboards are typically 7 foot or shorter.
1985 Longboard revival.
2000 Computer made board and epoxy boards.
